Fiat Chrysler Recalls 1.4m Cars Over Cyber Hack Concerns.

Fiat Chrysler announced a recall of about 1.4m cars and trucks in the US, following an article in The Wired magazine which exposed a vulnerability that could allow hackers to disable them on highways.

The Wired magazine revealed how hackers had taken control of a Jeep Cherokee, via its internet-connected entertainment system, and managed to change its speed, control its brakes, radio, windshield wipers and transmission.

This is the first US recall over concerns about hacking and it affects vehicles with 8.4-inch touchscreens including Chrysler 200 and 300, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Cherokee SUVs, as well as, Ram pickups and Dodge Viper Sports cars.

Karl Brauer, an analyst at Kelly Blue Book, a car information service, stated that “…it’s not unrealistic to regard vehicles’ electronic control systems ….as of similar importance in terms of safety to a vehicle’s brakes or fuel system.”

No vehicles sold in the UK are affected and Chrysler said this is a voluntary recall to update the software in the affected cars so as to provide added security protection.
